John Deegan worked in local government for 36 years, holding senior posts in a number of county councils. He was Director of Planning, Transport & Economic Strategy, and latterly Strategic Director of Environment and Economy, at Warwickshire County Council for over 13 years. Before that he was service head for Property at Hertfordshire County Council. He also was an elected City Councillor in Oxford for nine years, chairing its Housing Committee for three of those.
He played a prominent role in the production of the currently adopted West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy, as the lead advisor to the Regional Planning Body during its preparation. He sat on a number of regional advisory bodies and, locally, advised the Coventry and Warwickshire Business Link, the Coventry Solihull Warwickshire Partnerships Limited and World Class Stratford Partnership.
Nationally, he has been an advisor to the Local Government Association and the County Councils’ Network on planning and economic issues and he is currently advising the DBERR (formerly DTI) on Business Support Simplification. He is the Immediate Past President of the County Surveyors’ Society and former chairman of its national committee on Strategic Planning and Regeneration. He is a Trustee of the Town and Country Planning Association.
John is skilled in the processes of partnership building and understands the complexities of leadership and people management. John has a wide network of consultants, trainers and facilitators and he personally supervises all projects and consultancies ensuring that the services provided are of the highest quality.
